We heart Helen!

hartleyweddings.co.uk

I first got to know Helen and her lovely husband Aaron back in early 2011 when Helen emailed me enquiring about having her real wedding featured in Wedding Ideas.

I took one look at her pretty photos and knew straight away they’d make a perfect feature. The couple’s smiley faces and the bright sunny day were exactly what we were looking for. However, it wasn’t just us that saw the potential, our lovely readers fell head-over-heels for Helen and Aaron and they’re still one of our most loved and talked about real-wedding couples to date. (See their wedding in issue 92)

Not only were Helen and Aaron’s wedding photos the perfect inspiration for you lovely readers, their tips, advice, and ideas proved invaluable for you all planning your weddings. Not just this, but Helen was a pleasure to work with and I’m pleased to say we became good friends through our regular email and phone chit-chats.

A few months down the line, the team here at WI HQ were planning some BIG ideas to celebrate our 100th issue and during one meeting, I was asked to suggest some of my favey real weddings and of course, Helen had to be up there.

And so, Helen went from real-wedding star to COVER MODEL! Yes that’s right – Helen was so gorgeous inside and out that we featured her as a model on our 100th magazine. (See the full feature in issue 100)

Helen has been such a big supporter of our magazine, that I wanted to say thanks in return and big up her wonderful photography business. (Not only is Helen a dream in front of the camera, she’s a pro behind the lens!) and can make you a star for your own beautiful big days. Not just that, she’s also a fully qualified wedding and occasion make-up artist, so she really will help you to shine. (Can this girl get any cooler? We think not!)

So there you have it real wedding star, cover model, pro-wedding photographer, and most recently new Mummy to baby Emilie, Helen Strong has got it all going on.

Congratulations Helen and Aaron, we wish you both lots of love and luck for the future.

Summer vs winter weddings – which will you choose?

Choosing when to wed can be a difficult task, especially when budgets are tight and with the UK weather as unpredictable as ever! If you’re undecided whether to choose a sizzling summer celebration or a fun and festive big day, check out our handy guide to the pros and cons of marrying in summer and winter…

Summer

1. With over a third of all weddings in the UK taking place during the glorious summer months, they remain the most popular choice for today’s couples. The warm sunshine and longer days mean you have more time to party and the dream of getting married outdoors can actually be a reality. Unfortunately, freak rain showers are unavoidable. It always rains in Blighty and if you accept that now, and have a good wet weather back-up plan, you’re less likely to feel disappointed if it happens.

2. Bright sunshine and blue skies, certainly do lift your photographs, but be careful here, too. Good photographers, and other suppliers, get booked up in a flash during the summer, so be an early bird to avoid missing out.

3. Another problem with that pesky sun? It can cause you to squint in your pictures. Choose a selection of locations for your posed shots, including some shaded areas, so your portraits are frown free.

4. Outdoor parties just sum up the summer. Pimm’s on the lawn, a game of croquet and strawberries and ice cream are made for blazing sunshine. But think of ways to make the heat more bearable for everyone. If the temperature soars during your reception, make sure there are plenty of chilled bottles of water on hand, and a gazebo so guests have shelter from the sun when they want it. You could also carry a pretty lace parasol throughout the day, to avoid any scary sunburn.

5. Finally, the holiday gamble. Yes, summer is perfect because people are more likely to take days off and come celebrate with you, but annoyingly your big day may well clash with their two weeks in Ibiza. My advice? Get your save the date cards out super early!

 Winter

1. Walking in a winter wonderland, picture it now, a bride all snuggled up in a fluffy faux-fur wrap and retro welly boots, a groom in picture book top hat and tails, and what’s the perfect finale for a wintery wedding? Snow of course! Snow is magical, and as Britons, we do get unashamedly excited on the odd occasion we are blessed with the white stuff, but if it arrives on your big day it could cause problems.

2. Sadly, some of your suppliers may not be able to get to you, and that vintage car you were hoping for will be a no-go. But have a 4×4 vehicle on hand and remember that the day is, ultimately, about you and your man getting married, so will anyone really care if the magician doesn’t turn up?!

3. Another hidden danger that brides sometimes forget is the spiralling cost of their wedding outfits, once they’ve added on all the little extras needed to stay warm and dry. Of course, you will need a shrug or jacket to wear if you want photos in the snow, and welly boots are great to get you to and from the car, but do you really need to spend hundreds? Why not customize a pair of boots you already own, using your wedding colours and initials?

4. On the other hand, you will be able to pinch some pounds during the colder months as it’s out of season, leaving more room in the budget for yummy mince pies and wine!

5. Savvy brides will also be able to save on the details by making the most of your venues in-house festive decorations.

So, which will you choose? Get on to our fab forum and share your ideas and tips with other real brides now!

Short wedding hair ideas!

Hello everyone! Today I’m talking about wedding hair. Not about updos versus down-dos or whether or not you should pay for a stylist or DIY. Instead, I’m tackling a far trickier subject – what to do with short hair for the big day. As a cropped-cut girl myself, I know how hard it can be to style length-less locks, but don’t be fooled into thinking you need to grow your hair to get a beautiful big day look. Here are my top 10 hair ideas for a dreamy short wedding day ‘do…

1. Retro waves

Think 50s chic with a glamorous edge. If you wear your hair straight, this retro look will transform you from the every day you to a glamorous girl in an instant. Simply part the hair to the side and use curlers or straighteners to create a few large waves to the tip.

Charlize Theron rocks retro waves

2. Statement hairband

If your hair is really fine and stubborn, don’t stress about trying to give it some oomph, instead, let your accessory do the talking. Statement side hairbands with pearls, crystals or bows look super elegant and will give your hair the volume you crave.

3. The quiff

I’m not talking about Cameron Diaz in There’s Something About Mary, just a subtle quiff that can be pinned back. For added volume and a rock ‘n’ roll twist, back comb the quiff. If you have fine hair, you may need to back comb or curl the rest of your ‘do so the quiff doesn’t look too dramatic.

4. Birdcage veil

Ordinary veils can swamp short hair, so consider a birdcage veil that’s a little shorter than your ‘do. You don’t have to do anything with your locks because the veil will be the focus point, but soft waves underneath can complete the elegant look.

5. Boho plait

Unless you have a pixie cut, you should have long enough hair to plait the front. For best results, start the plait a little further than you would have a side parting and work it across your hair line to the opposite ear. Pin back with grips and spray. Effortlessly beautiful!

Pixie Lott's effortless plait

6. Half-up, half-down

Despite having short hair, if your locks reach your jaw line, you should have enough hair to attempt the half-up, half-down ‘do. Simply take small sections of hair from either side of your face then pin back. Crystal or pearl pins will complement the style, perfectly.

7. A single flower

For a summery hair idea, consider placing a flower behind your ear, preferably one that features in your bouquet. It gives a laid-back, beach or country wedding look with minimal effort and expenditure!

8. Juliet cap

Another way of rocking a retro, Charleston look is to wear a Juliet cap. They cover a lot of your hair and are a great alternative to veils. The best bit? All you have to do is give your hair a lick over with the straighteners, and you’re done!

9. Chic headbands

From flowery garlands for a festival-chic look to silver bands with a feather to finish for vintage brides, headbands across the forehead will look stunning, no matter what you do to the hair.

Paris Hilton loves this glamorous look

10. Grip one side

As simple as it sounds – as you would put your hair up, just pull back one side at the front and either plait it and secure, or simply grip with a comb if your hair is thick enough. The comb needs to be quite chunky to make it stand out, but this will allow you to leave the rest of the ‘do more or less untouched.

… And there you have it! If you wear your hair short every day, then you absolutely shouldn’t feel like you have to grow it for your wedding. There are so many ways to dress your cropped tresses, and hopefully this feature has given you a few more ideas. Right, I’m off to try some of these looks out… Speak soon, Jade x

Honeymoon hideaways – The 6 sexiest islands in the world!

Honeymoons are a once-in-a-lifetime experience, says Rowena Carr-Allinson. Make the most of yours, blow the budget and escape to a picture-perfect island hideaway: the stuff dream brochures are made of!

Lovely Little Palm, Florida, USA

For a really private hideaway check into the ultra exclusive Little Palm Island Resort & Spa: accessible only by boat or seaplane. A million miles away from the rest of the world, the resort is a tranquil honeymoon hotspot where elegance and casual cool rule. There’s everything you’d expect: palm fringed beaches, attentive staff, gourmet cuisine and oversized four-poster beds swathed in mosquito netting. Lie by the pool, on the beach or in a hammock, or get close to nature kayaking the mangroves. Prefer a little more speed? Borrow a motor boat to visit the surrounding uninhabited islands.

Blazing sunshine, white sandy beaches and pristine aquamarine waters… Hide out on honeymoon at Southern Cross, a beach resort with 14 rooms set in colourful beach chalets, and a very laid back attitude. Forget TVs and phones, this is about barefoot romance. It’s the place for divers and snorkelers, said to be in the world’s top 3 diving spots by Jacques Cousteau, but there’s plenty to do if you prefer not to go underwater. Take a kayak trip to uninhabited Owen Island, visit the local iguanas, take a picnic to Point of Sands beach or simply watch the stunning turquoise sea from the comfort of your hack.

A long-time favourite with backpackers, Samui also has some stunning luxury resorts. In Maenam, the Napasai run by the Orient Express hotels group is a perfect ‘get away from it all’ honeymoon retreat. Luxury, relaxation and super-friendly staff are all part of the deal. Thai style individual villas with sea views are spread over 17 acres where coconut palms, cashew, jack fruit and mango trees abound. A true tropical oasis! Wedding speech tips that’ll wow your guests!

Giving a wedding speech can be one of the most nerve-wracking moments of the big day. So we caught up with leading speech writer, commentator and coach, Lawrence Bernstein, who’s got some top tips to help you get started…

wfphoto.co.uk--IMG_2180AA-Dad

Your dad should toast the bride and groom during his speech Pic: wfphoto.co.uk

Father of the bride
1. Who’s Peter?: Although your primary purpose is to talk about your daughter in your wedding speech, don’t make the mistake of forgetting to mention your new son-in-law. Love him or loathe him, half the guests are there for him and they’ll be wanting to know how happy you are for them both.
2. Welcome the guests: It’s a nice gesture for the father of the bride to mention those who’ve travelled far and anyone of a particularly significant age – the very old or the very young.
3. Keep it short: Yours is the first wedding speech so don’t let it drag on too long. Make sure it’s no more than 10 minutes (timed when speaking slowly) which on paper is about 1,000 words.
4. Managing the nerves: If the big moment has arrived and you’re feeling terrified, then before you start the speech, ask the people at the back of the room if they can hear you. It’s an old trick, but it allows you to get those first few words out, will get a response from the crowd, and should help you settle.
5. The toast: Don’t forget to take a glass with you to make a toast to the Bride and Groom.

A-326.mackieandmackie.com-best-man

Remember that your best man's speech should be a balance of humour and sincerity Pic: mackieandmackie.com

Best Man
1. Humour vs Sincerity: Too many Best Men write their wedding speeches with a bunch of friends over a few beers. This can be fun at the time but often results in a speech high on rude stories and innuendo but low on sincerity. Strike a balance. The audience will enjoy some jokes at the Groom’s expense, but in a context that demonstrates he’s a good friend with some decent qualities.
2. Ask around: Ask the Groom’s parents for stories from his childhood, his siblings for their version of events from the early years, his fiancée about her first impressions of him and the stags for any memorable stories, to get a good, mixed content.
3. It’s not all about you. It may be tempting to focus your speech on your own relationship with the Groom, but if you labour the point too heavily it can sound like narcissism. This is not your chance to boast about how close you are, how funny you find each other or how many girls you’ve both slept with.
4. At the same time don’t gush! If you’re the emotional type you might be tempted to use your speech to thank him publicly for everything he’s ever done for you. Be careful. Very few people will care and you risk appearing self-indulgent.
5. Don’t be put off by a heckle. The rest of your audience will want to hear what you have to say.  And most of them will be as irritated as you are by the uninvited interruption. Smile, pause and carry on.

natalie-darren-1331.barriedownie.com-bride

Don't have time to talk to everyone during the day? Thank them in your speech! Pic: barriedownie.com

Bride
1. Timing: Some Brides want to use their speech to mark the end of the celebrations. This can be dangerous. Some guests will have left, many will be drunk and you may have missed the moment. I’d suggest speaking directly after your husband, providing a female perspective and leaving the Best Man to finish things off.
2. Enlist a friend: Most wedding dresses don’t leave much room for your notes. So make sure you’ve asked a bridesmaid or close friend in advance to hold onto your speech until you need it.
3. Consult the other speakers: Your biggest risk is covering ground that has already been mentioned in the other speeches. I would strongly recommend that however original you think your speech may be, you have a quick chat with your Groom, your Dad and the Best Man to ensure there is no frustrating overlap!
4. Be nice to your new family: This is not the time to offend your mother-in-law – you’ve got plenty of years ahead of you to do that! If you’re mentioning your own family, it would be courteous to include your husband’s too.
5. End with a Toast: I wouldn’t repeat one of the traditional toasts given by the other speakers. This is a great opportunity to include other people or say something a little bit different. You could toast your hosts (i.e. ‘Mum and Dad’) or propose a more general toast to ‘friends and family’.

547.designhousenw.co.uk-groom

Avoid a long list of thank yous – and don't forget to say how beautiful the bride looks! Pic: designhousenw.co.uk

Groom
1. Avoid a long list of thank yous: Nothing can be more dull or unoriginal than a speech that resembles a school register of thanks. Stick to those that really need a mention.
2. Having said that: Don’t forget to thank your new in-laws (particularly if they are hosting the wedding), or your own parents. This is an opportunity to thank them for all those years of help and support.
3. Don’t spend more time building up the Best Man than the Bride. Although it’s nice to reference the Best Man and poke a bit of fun at him, remember that your wedding day is about your relationship with your Bride not your best mate.
4. Liaise with her Dad. Assuming he is speaking before you, it’s worth checking that you are not going to be duplicating too many thanks or anecdotes about your Bride, how you met, or the proposal.
5.  She’s your ‘wife’ so feel free to mention it! Nothing gets more of heart-warming cheer than the line “my wife and I…”. Yes it’s predicable and a little bit cheesy, but the novelty of hearing it for the first time never fails to please your new bride or your guests. And that cheer will relax a nervous speaker no end.

Lawrence has written speeches and presentations for hundreds of clients in the UK and overseas, including businessmen, politicians and hundreds of nervous Fathers-of-the Bride, Best Men and Brides. Opulent glamour at Fetcham Park

Just a short hello from me this morning, as I’ve been desperate to share with you this dramatic styled shoot for a few weeks now.

I hope you’ve all had a lovely week, and remember, if you have any wedding related questions or problems leave a comment below and we’ll endeavour to sort it for you!

Now read on and happy swooning over the pretty pics below…

Opulent Glamour styled shoot at Fetcham Park, Leatherhead, Surrey

Early one cold, cloudy day in January a team of spirited wedding professionals arrived at the grand Fetcham Park House for a highly stylized bridal shoot captured by the talented  Fiona Kelly. This amazing event was born from a spontaneous twitter conversation, and months of meticulous planning, research and sharing of ideas.

Using the opulent interior of Fetcham Park House, with its stunning features and dramatic lighting, this look is all about over the top glamour and decadence.  Taking inspiration from the grandeur of masquerade balls and the Marie Antoinette era, the ‘Geisha’s Swan Lake Dress’ from The State of Grace Bridal provides all the necessary drama with its huge rosette and feathered skirt and embroidered corset top.  Big hair, by hair stylist Hayley King and flawless make-up with smokey eyes and strong brows by make-up artist Ana Ospina Ruiz give our model bride, Lucy, plenty of attitude.  The look is completed with a selection of accessories from Victoria Mary Vintage, a statement feathered and sequinned headband working seamlessly with the dress, as well as a black birdcage veil adding to the mysterious and glamorous effect.

On the table, styled by b.loved Weddings, a striking black iced wedding cake provides the main feature, embellished with edible, jewel-like brooches and iced white lace, by Tempting Cake.  The opulence continues with crystal-strung candelabras adorned with a lavish floral display of natural white blooms to the centre of the table, by Fairynuff Flowers, and diamante encrusted vases and votives carrying elegant white blooms lower down, contrasting against the decadent black lace table cloth.  The lace motif continues in the unusual black stationery design by Beyond Beyond, displayed under scattered crystal adding another touch of reflection and sparkle.

Your 20 must have wedding photos

Here at Wedding Ideas HQ ultimately, all we want is for you to have THE best wedding of your life, with as little (no) stress as possible… So to help you get one step closer to achieving that, I’ve put together a must have ‘shot list’, which you can send right on over to your photographer today.

Obviously there will be others depending on the kind of day you’re having, and any little unique details you’ve added yourself, but this is my one-stop guide to all things photography.

So here we go, my ultimate list and a beautiful selection of images taken from Freddie and James’ wedding last year, to illustrate the above. Enjoy. All images courtesy of

Albert Palmer Photography.

  1.  A gorgeous outside shot of your venue – you picked it because it was pretty, right? So show it off!
  2.  Bride’s details: We class this as your shoes, jewellery, perfume and gifts for your best girls
  3. Bride getting ready: Hair and make-up
  4. Bridal party getting ready (giving bridesmaids gifts)
  5. Putting THE dress on.
  6. Ceremony entertainment (String quartet, live band, pianist etc)
  7. Bridal party all dressed up in their finery
  8. Bride’s arrival (This is your moment – don’t rush. Savour every sweet second!)

  12. Reception tables (You want to remember them when they looked all neat and beautiful – before everyone came along and, lets be honest, messed them up!)
  13. Table plan – A good way of remembering everyone who attended, and a lovely look at your stationery
  14. The cake. Yum yum.
  15. Transport
  16. A good full length couple shot
  17.  The speeches (Grooms, best man’s, Dad’s and your’s – if you decide to give one)
  18. Cupcakes, sweets, favours, cameras etc all the little details that made your party fun. This could include other forms of entertainment like a Groovybooth or band.
  19. Cutting the cake.

Beauty ideas, bridesmaid dresses and new award venues! Pippa on the road

Another week in the life of Wedding Ideas’ Brand Manager, and wow what a great week it was! It started with a visit to the chic Leticia Haute Coiffure Salon in Marylebone, where I was shown their fantastic range of services and luxurious Keraskin body treatments. They also ran through their services and packages for the bridal party and groomsmen. Packages are flexible and couples can tailor them to suit. I will definitely be going back for a full body MOT and to try one of their famous massages!

I later headed across town to see the launch of the new Duchamp menswear collection. If you want your man to stand our this season then make sure you check out their gorgeous Italian and Scottish fabrics and classical British tailoring. So Made In Chelsea darling! My evening finished with a very British high tea at Fortnum and Mason to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. Quality at its very best! And to top it off, they offered teeny little Eggs Benedict canapés – now that’s what I’m talking about!

The Tower - a Guoman hotel

So with nine months to go, we are already making plans for next year’s Wedding Ideas Awards ceremony, and where better to start than with a brand new venue? Yes my friends, I am delighted to announce that the 2013 Wedding Ideas Awards will be held at the stunning Tower Hotel! We couldn’t resist its fabulous event spaces and beautiful backdrop of Tower Bridge. We are so thrilled to be working with the Guoman group. Let the planning commence!

Pippa Ward wears Twobirds Bridesmaid gown

Now I am a sucker when it comes to beautiful bridesmaid dresses and I’ve been desperate to try on a Twobirds Bridesmaid gown since we saw this clever multi-way design hit the market a few years ago. I popped in to the Notting Hill store to meet the team and to check out their gorgeous range of dresses. ! I may have accidentally purchased one to wear to our Giraffe Summer Bash in July – oops!

Snow Paradise at K Spa

Next I was off to visit my local K Spa, at K West Hotel to find out more about the launch of their new Russian Blanch treatments, which are a selection of products containing the finest plant extracts, such as Ginseng and Siberian Golden root, which smelled delish! You can indulge in one of their sumptuous treatments to follow up with a session in their wet spa, which offers the only snow room in London. Here you can really experience the Russian hot and cold treatments for yourself.

To finish my week, we have now launched our first Exclusive Reader Event, which will take place on 14th May at One Whitehall Place in London. Twenty five lucky brides plus a guest will be invited to join the Wedding Ideas team and some of London’s leading suppliers for an evening of bubbles, canapés and wedding fun. They will also be the first to see our brand new website before it goes live. And to top it off, we have the fabulous Michele Paradise with us who will be doing a short presentation for our guests.

My week finishes with one of my favourite clients and very good friends, Mark and Lesley from the award-winning dress manufacturer Mark Lesley. Like our readers, we love their gorgeous dresses and their commitment to consistently deliver the best in customer service. What a treat to have them all to myself for the afternoon!
Happy bank holiday weekend, lets pray for some sunshine!
See you next week!

Love Pippa x
